Suspicious package sent to local council reinforces need for security scanners

Earlier this week, emergency services were called to Harborough’s District Councils’ office in Market Harborough after a ‘suspicious package’ was discovered. An envelope containing white powder and a letter reading “You’ve been anthraxed” rightly led Council employees to act and call the police.

The envelope was locked down in the post room while the Police brought in a mobile lab in order to quickly test the substance. It turned out to be harmless.

The threat was sent in retaliation to a planning application, although the Council remains unsure which one.

What this event reinforces is that, unfortunately, the mailroom remains a popular avenue into organisations that criminals continue to exploit. As such, businesses can no longer take the safety of employees for granted. They must understand that security scanners can greatly reduce the risk of harmful materials entering via mail, with any locked down in the mailroom before they can inflict the intended damage.
