Forty per cent of small businesses surveyed recently by Neopost (in conjunction with Businessinfo magazine) still stick stamps on envelopes rather than using a modern alternative like a Mailmark franking machine.

On 26th February 2016, Royal Mail announced that it would be changing its tariffs across stamps and franking machines, and those changes have now come into effect. The price of stamps (first, second and large letters) have all increased by 1p, as have the franking machine rates across all classes and sizes.

On March 30 Royal Mail increased the cost of sending a first and second class letter. A hike in the price of postage is never welcome, even if it is by just 1p. Monday's 1p hike in the price of a first class stamp is a reminder that even at a time of zero inflation the cost of some items continues to rise. Raising the cost of sending a letter is never popular. At a time of falling prices at the pumps and on the High Street, it is even less likely to be welcomed. Instead of railing against Royal Mail, why not turn the price increase to your advantage.
