On Monday 27th March, Royal Mail’s tariff changes came into effect. Announced in February, the amendments have seen a host of increases across franking machine and parcel prices. The Royal Mail took the decision in order to keep providing its excellent service, but calculating how the changes will impact businesses isn’t always straightforward.

UK small businesses are wasting hundreds and thousands of pounds every year by using stamps to send their mail. Forty per cent of small businesses surveyed recently by Neopost (in conjunction with Businessinfo magazine) still stick stamps on envelopes rather than using a modern alternative like a Mailmark franking machine.

On 26th February 2016, Royal Mail announced that it would be changing its tariffs across stamps and franking machines, and those changes have now come into effect. The price of stamps (first, second and large letters) have all increased by 1p, as have the franking machine rates across all classes and sizes.

Royal Mail has recently published their 2016 pricing for franking which becomes effective on Tuesday 29th March 2016. Under the new Royal Mail tariff, Mailmark franking machine users will enjoy discounts on the price of a Stamp of as much as 32% for a 2nd Class letter and over 20% for a 1st Class letter.

The recent Royal Mail price increase, which saw the cost of 1st and 2nd Class stamps go up by 1p, came into force on 30th March. While this may not sound like a drastic increase, with so many still relying on physical post to communicate with customers, it all adds up – particularly for smaller businesses.

On March 30 Royal Mail increased the cost of sending a first and second class letter. A hike in the price of postage is never welcome, even if it is by just 1p. However, the new tariffs are not all bad news for mail users. In fact, there is much to cheer about, especially for those who send large numbers of parcels.

Monday's 1p hike in the price of a first class stamp is a reminder that even at a time of zero inflation the cost of some items continues to rise. Raising the cost of sending a letter is never popular. At a time of falling prices at the pumps and on the High Street, it is even less likely to be welcomed. Instead of railing against Royal Mail, why not turn the price increase to your advantage.

From Monday 30th March 2015, the price of a first class stamp will increase by 1p to 63p and the price of a second class stamp by 1p to 54p. The cost of a first class Mailmark frank is to rise by 2p to 51p and the cost of a second class one by 1p to 36p.
