Romford, 27th November 2013: With the busiest shopping period of the year just weeks away, Neopost is urging all retailers to look again at what they charge for parcel deliveries, especially for online sales.
A new article on the Neopost blog cites research by IMRG and eDigitalResearch showing that in the last year 77% of online shoppers have abandoned their trolley before checking out, at an annual cost of £6 billion in lost revenue. More than half (53%) said the main reason they did so was the high cost of delivery. Of these, almost three quarters (65%) then searched the internet to see if they could find a similar item from another retailer that charged less for delivery.
In its blog, Neopost calls on online merchants and traditional retailers who offer a parcel delivery service to check that they are taking advantage of the most affordable tariffs or risk losing custom.
Its analysis shows that for small parcels weighing less than 1kg, Royal Mail's second class service is much the most affordable option. For franking machine users who enjoy discounts on Royal Mail postage, it is more than 50% cheaper than some popular alternative providers, making franking a cost-effective option even for very small retailers.
The potential benefits are even greater, following an expansion of Royal Mail's small parcels category to include shoe box-sized items measuring up to 35 x 25 x 16cm, in addition to the original flatter size of 45 x 35 x 8cm. The new size enables businesses to send a much greater variety of goods at Royal Mail's cheapest tariff, including shoes, clothing and small electrical items.
